An Open Letter to Sponsors: A Partnership in Recovery

Dear Sponsors,
At Sober Step Solutions, we want to express our deep gratitude for the critical role you play in the lives of those you sponsor. Your dedication, experience, and insight are indispensable in each person’s journey toward recovery. We believe that recovery is a path that requires strong support, mutual respect, and unity, and that’s why we’re writing this. I would like to share how we aim to work hand-in-hand with you to strengthen this path for those we all support.

A Shared Purpose, Different Roles

Just as sponsorship provides essential guidance within a fellowship context, coaching can help individuals navigate other aspects of life, like achieving personal or professional goals, developing healthy habits, or finding effective strategies for handling stress and triggers outside of meetings. Our services are grounded in love and respect for the 12-step process and aim to complement—never replace—the role of a sponsor.

Empowering Each Person’s Journey

In the coaching relationship, we focus on day-to-day skills, practical goal-setting, and positive habits that help people feel empowered and engaged in their personal lives. By doing this, our intention is to build upon the foundation that sponsors help establish. Sponsors provide wisdom and guidance for navigating the spiritual and emotional challenges of recovery. Meanwhile, our coaches are here to support individuals in identifying and working toward personal milestones in areas that may lie outside of sponsorship.

Working Together for Stronger Outcomes

We deeply respect the sponsor-sponsee relationship and always encourage our clients to maintain open, honest communication with their sponsors. In the spirit of partnership, we welcome opportunities for open dialogue with sponsors to ensure that our combined efforts reinforce and respect each other’s guidance. Our goal is never to conflict but to create a seamless, supportive experience that meets each person’s needs holistically.

Completing the Circle of Support

As a sponsor, you are a pivotal figure in a person’s life, and we honor that. By working together, we can ensure that each person in recovery has access to the full spectrum of support that strengthens their resilience, commitment, and sense of purpose. If there’s ever a way we can be of assistance to you, or if you have suggestions on how our services can better serve those in recovery, please feel free to reach out.
Thank you for the invaluable role you play. Together, we can help guide individuals toward a healthy, fulfilling, and sober life.

Testimonials

What They’re Saying

I am blessed that I met Bill in a medical specialty group. Bill is always a calm, soothing, sympathetic and caring person whether he is sharing or listening to others share.

I can honestly say I am stronger and mentally healthier having met Bill. Bill is a person I know I can always reach out to for support, direction and guidance on how to get through any situation without reverting back to abusing unhealthy or addictive substances. Bill leads me to solutions and strategies for positive, mindful and sober results. If I’m having a bad day Bill can sense it and at the end of our talks I feel better. If I’m having a good day he makes me feel better and stronger.

Bill sees someone struggling he listens and really hears what they are saying and offers solutions. If you’re in a storm Bill doesn’t just guide you to get through it, he jumps in and fights the storm with you. Bill doesn’t just talk about random solutions he gets you to a solution that offers you what you need based on your personal situation.

I keep a gratitude list and Bill is included on that list. He gives me inspiration, hope, accountability, resources and is always there to help me on my journey to recovery. If I slip and fall down, I know I can reach out to Bill and he will be there with a smile, guidance and support to make me get back up stronger and brighter than before. For that I will always be grateful.

I have been working with Bill for the last six months on my journey to permanent sobriety. It has been my experience that the first few weeks of treatment can be overwhelming due to the wide range of programs and medical resources available. Bill has been instrumental in helping me navigate my way through this process.

Bill is a great mentor for this role and has a terrific demeanor. He approaches it with empathy and compassion and is never judgemental. Having gone through this process and major medical complications himself, he is able to advise on many aspects of recovery including spiritual support, community support resources, avoiding triggers, and seeking out medical care. He is also willing to adapt to a client's desired level of involvement which is comforting.

I am pleased to continue to work with Bill on my ongoing recovery efforts.

Even though my journey of recovery began a little while before Bill's, then meeting him during his journey, he became that added spirit of motivation, encouragement and spiritual strength that fueled something within me. I learned something from his experiences that were different from mine and others. To be a good sponsor, mentor, coach, or counselor requires a willingness and openness to learn from others. This is something I saw in and learned from him.
